The Prevailing Social Context of Research Ethics Review

To understand the social context of research ethics review, it is useful to consider Becker’s hierarchy of credibility (1967) – the idea that institutional hierarchies exist that privilege higher status groups’ interpretations over the interpretations and experiences of marginalized groups. Experts, such as prison wardens are more readily believed about their understanding of prison settings than what prisoners themselves say about prisons.

In the context of research ethics review, ethics boards are placed higher in the hierarchy of credibility than students. Researchers, too, occupy a lower stratum of credibility than ethics boards. However, research participants believe they occupy a yet lower place in the hierarchy of credibility than researchers. I shall now turn to each of these groups.
